WHEN TO BUG-IN

WHEN TO BUG IN is personal and depends on your plans and how well you have laid them. Below is a list of things to consider in the context of the type of event you may be facing. These are my opinions on the matter.

When you have numbers working in your favour. If the odds are against you and you know that, don’t stick around to find out. Get out. You know what your triggers are, or at least you should. Once crossed, move. But if on the other hand you have a well laid plan rich with access to water, food, resources, security, and stout shelter then stay put for the time being. Hope your supplies last. Be prepared to move if they don’t.

You are more together. If you have a big group you have advantages. And you have disadvantages. Disadvantages might include more personalities to manage, more people to feed, more resources required to maintain the group. Also harder or conceal, or keep secret. On the other hand an armed force of like minded individuals, with knowledge and training coordinating in groups can be a force multiplier. Working covertly or openly, armed, prepared citizenry with training, resources, and weapons become much more mobile and movements become their choice to use as they need it.

Nuclear Event and Proximity to it (fallout) Should you find yourself in the fallout zone of a nuclear event you need to stay put, “to shelter in place.” You will need to seal your house. You will need to have shelter within your shelter. You will need water, food, means of sanitation storage or disposal. You will need potassium iodide tablets. One a day for everyone. There is a lot of information about what to do in nuclear attacks. Distance to day ratios for sheltering in the fallout zone.

You have a strong, and well-hidden defensive position. Can be city or rural Occupy a niche, own it. Make it secret. If in the city, think about specific buildings you can use or takeover, occupy. Maybe have a few pre-scouted locations in different areas of town. Consider using the underground city? Look for easy to defend strong points. You want good visibility on all approaches. In rural or remote locations…think sub-alpine, boreal, northern lake islands, back range mountain valleys, sub arctic. Hard work. Again, keep it secret. Stock it now. If you have a place like this stay there. If you have a place like this that you can make it to, go there. Think about finding a way to make a living at your ideal location now.

You live in a remote location with access to water, food, shelter thousands of miles from anyone. Stay there as long as you can.

When it is not safe to move. Cities in chaos. Urban warfare. Nuclear event. Pandemic. More than 72 hours after an event. If you have not moved , don’t, wait out if you can. Move when it is safe. Move when you have the best odds of making it to wherever you are going. Move if it will be better there than where it is for you know. Prepare, then prepare to move. Learn the skills now that you can take with you. Learn to shoot, to track, to hunt, to fish, to forage, to move.
